Best time to buy
Mar 24, 2025 | by CarBee

When it comes to purchasing a used car, timing can significantly impact both your options and your wallet. While there's no universal perfect moment to buy, understanding market patterns and seasonal trends can help you make a more informed decision.
End-of-year deals
December, particularly the last two weeks of the year (and early January), often sees dealerships pushing to meet annual sales targets and clear inventory. This urgency frequently translates into more flexible pricing. Selection might be more limited during this period, so balance potential savings against available choices.
End of month
The end of each month can also present opportunities, as dealerships and individual sellers work to meet monthly quotas or move vehicles that have been sitting on their lots. This works particularly well if you've done your research beforehand and are ready to make a prompt decision.
January and February
These months typically see lower prices as dealerships experience reduced customer traffic.
Tax season
July through October often brings an influx of used cars to the market as people use their tax refunds to upgrade vehicles, potentially creating more competitive pricing. The EOFY period is also a great time to look for bargains. There may also be asset write-off opportunities if you own a business.
Weather patterns
Convertibles and sports cars often command lower prices during winter months when demand naturally dips. Conversely, SUVs and four-wheel-drive vehicles might be more expensive heading into summer.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Research market values for your target vehicles
- Check seasonal pricing trends for your desired car type
- Verify your budget, including insurance and maintenance costs
- Prepare financing options before shopping
- Review vehicle history reports
- Schedule professional mechanical inspections
- Compare prices across multiple sellers
- Plan your purchase timing around end-of-month or end-of-year sales when possible
Remember that while timing is important, it shouldn't be the only factor in your decision. A well-maintained vehicle at a fair price is generally a better choice than a problematic one at a steep discount, regardless of when you're buying.
